July 29 - MONKEYSUIT presents Violet Violet

Tasty, barbed musical morsels snatched from the fingers, mouths and hearts of PJ Harvey, Sleater-Kinney and Huggy Bear, heavily seasoned with violet violet’s own arty brand of vibrant wit and wisdom. This is gossip rock. It’s edgy, full-on bitching, harmoniously delivered by a feisty trio of sardonic sirens. Tumbling tunes stuffed full of primal tribal rhythms with buzzsaw bass, gyrating guitars and a dual-pronged lead vocal attack that’s guaranteed to get you singing and bopping along to their infectious DIY dancefloor ditties.  Support from Gunning For Tamar, Mark is Egg and D. Maul and Andre Fu(djs).

Wednesday 7th July, BBC INTRODUCING LIVE presents The Chapman Family

Wednesday 7th July, BBC INTRODUCING LIVE presents The Chapman Family

The Chapman Family are a group of four miserable northerners from Teesside, England and have been playing together since May 2006 – Kingsley Chapman (vocals/guitar), Pop Chapman (bass), Paul Chapman (guitar), and Phil Chapman (drums). They decided to create their own brand of intensely dark and noisy indie as they were tired of being bored and uninspired by the same old bands week in, week out. They are as much inspired by folk as hardcore punk and their occasionally chaotic gigs can change from euphoric to the apocalypse in an instant.

Detachments - Thursday 23rd September

Detachments are a London based troupe that have caused ripples of excitement across dancefloors over the past year and are returning to The Oakford as part of their UK tour to promote their debut album (produced by James Ford from Simian Mobile Disco)  They’ve previously collaborated with the likes of Andrew Weatherall, Martyn and PItchforks favourite - Salem and describe themselves as “Cold Wave, Minimal Wave, corrupted Synthpop. All intoxicated with a dark-hearted, punk, outsider spirit.”  And it holds true that they are indeed the purveyors of twisted, Machine-Pop Noir with their blend of dark futuristic sounds and dubbed-out disco-punk basslines.

Sonar 2010

This years Sonar Festival in Barcelona took place across two indoor and two outdoor stages with over three days of events focused around “advanced music and multimedia art”.  Art, audiovisual concerts, and medialab presentations next to DJ sets, electonic music, film and more.  This years bill ranged from glitches, glides and ethereal vocals from London based Nedry, to experimental organic electronica that is Caribou, to bigger named acts such as The Chemical Brothers and Dizzee Rascal.  As part of the mayhem there were a range of Interactive multimedia installations: Marcel-lí Antúnez created a video wall of cartoonish craziness that placed viewers’ faces in the action.  ReacTable, by the Musical Technology Group from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, was a video-terminal table that responded to users moving around blocks and discs, showing connections like a flow chart as it triggered clicks and clatters.  And Golan Levin and Zachary Lieberman displayed a piece called Messa di Voce that made bubbles and drew lines using a microphone and tracking system.  Lets hope i can actually make it along next year.

Coming up in July… Sunday Girl

‘As Sunday Girl, Jade Williams has found her own melancholic yet uplifting sound, honed with producers such as Diplo and Jim Elliot (a favourite of Kylie and Ladyhawke). She is a strong addition to the wave of synth-friendly feisty female artists such as Alison Goldfrapp and Bat for Lashes.’
Alice Fisher | Observer

Sunday Girl will be appearing at the Oakford Social Club on Thursday 1st of July. WHOOOP!

SEXBEAT / Branchage viral series part.2 Tweak Bird

SEXBEAT / Branchage viral series part.2 Tweak Bird

Installment no.2 of the SEXBEAT viral series with Branchage film festival is a collaboration between Tweak Bird and directors Fred Grace & Gemma Atkinson. Tweak Bird make a whole bunch of noise for a 2 piece band of brothers (siblings that is, not over blown US drama). Their set at the SEXBEAT – Stag & Dagger stage felt more like a guest pass to their practice room than a festival performance, as they engrossed the crowd in a 30 minute, riff heavy jam, sounding much more Kyuss than No Age.
